At IU, an ongoing battle for a parking spot

September 12, 2013

One of the biggest complaints made on large university campuses today is not about the cost of tuition, lack of instruction from professors or even the exams, but parking. Yes, parking.
Finding a parking spot on a large university campus is as impossible as trying to find a Purdue fan outside of West Lafayette.
While it is understood that most campuses do not offer ample parking spaces to discourage students from leaving the campus during the school year, universities are still ignorant as to how most students actually get to campus – in cars.

A fond memory of time with Otis ‘Doc’ Bowen

September 9, 2013

The passing of Bremen’s favorite son, Otis Bowen, in May wakened a sweet memory of the first time we met.
Most Mint City folks know Doc began his pubic service career as Marshall County Coroner.
He served as a member of the Indiana House of Representatives from 1956 to 1958 and again from 1960 to 1972.
He was speaker from 1967 to 1972.
He was elected governor in 1972 and re-elected for a second term in 1976, making him the first governor to serve for eight consecutive years in Indiana since 1851.

Communicating should be more than just noise

Connections: Relating the Bible to Life

I sat motionless at my desk, staring at the telephone as if it were about to leap up at any minute and pin me against the back of my chair.
Just a few minutes ago it had been my ally, facilitating a conversation with my best friend who was living almost 6,000 miles away.
Now it seemed too dangerous to touch.
The year was 1997, and I had committed to a one-year missions endeavor in Krasnodar, Russia.
On this day, however, my thoughts were on the girl who had dropped me off at the airport in Tennessee several months earlier.
