A Bremen Life Well-Lived

September 2, 2014

Wayne Manges is a Bremen original.
As he hit his 92nd year, his daughter, Marcia, thought she'd look to brag on him a bit and also remind people of the good people that grow up here.
"He was the eldest of eight kids," she remembers.
He quit school in the ninth grade because that's what the oldest did back then, to help work the family farm, then off Miami Road. He was born on that farm.
His own dad had rented farmland until he saved enough to buy his own farm and the family trade was started.
His siblings went through high school because the eldest was able to work the farm.

The Final Chapter of a Vocation Well-Served

August 29, 2014

BREMEN -- Bremen Public Library's director of 37 years, Marsha Patterson, has announced her plans to retire on Aug. 29.
Oddly enough, she never planned on becoming a library director.
In fact, when she got the job in October of 1977, she couldn't have been more surprised.
"I think I was in shock," she said. "I didn't have much confidence in myself at that time. With pressure from my mother, Dorothy Baldwin, I went to the interview with no expectations. I'm not much of a talker but I think I talked continuously. I didn't even remember what I said. So when I was hired I was surprised."

Schools Open With Usual Flourish

August 24, 2014

BREMEN -- The first day of school was the usual flurry of activity, yet preparedness by the staff made it seem seamless.
At the high school, the usual excited chatter, inspection of class lists and figuring out who you know is in class with you made for most of the conversation.
Quickly, the patterns began to be established.
In one history class, the instructor took charge immediately with a 15-question test.
Many students had laptop ‚"issues," so some of them had to fill out answers the time-honored way, with paper and pencil.
In gym classes, the workout room was in full use.
