Council discusses new well field

April 23, 2014

BREMEN -- Much of the discussion at Bremen Town Council meeting held on April 14 was in relationship to the potential for a new field in the park.
In November, the council was in discussions with PeerLess Midwest for a $3.65 million project for the engineering and construction of two wells. Since that time, the council has come to believe it will be in the better interest of money and resources to install only one well, with a 1,000 per gallon limit.

BPS search for new superintendent

BREMEN — The Bremen Public Schools Board of Trustees began their meeting Tuesday, April 1 with a resolution to elect a board of committee members to assist in the search for a new superintendent. The committee will discuss their search with stake holders, develop requirements and search through resumes in search of a replacement for Russ Mikel for the coming school year.
Bremen High School worked with Plymouth and Triton schools on site visits to observe Project Lead the Way Programs.

Swartlander Benefit raises money for Bremen youth

BREMEN — The Bremen Police Department hosted the 18th annual Swartzlander Basketball Benefit Thursday evening at Bremen High School to honor this year's beneficiary Jazmin Padilla, a student at Bremen Elementary. 

Each year, the benefit provides assistance to families throughout Marshall County with medical and daily living expenses. Jazmin was born prematurely and has undergone repeated surgeries stemming from multiple health issues ranging from epilepsy to pyloric stenosis, according to her mother, Angela Padilla.

CHB prepares for Spring Sensation

BREMEN — The Community Hospital of Bremen Foundation's 3th annual Spring Sensation will take place Saturday, April 26 at St. Isadore Hall. The event will celebrate the 65th anniversary of the Community Hospital of Bremen
This year's goal is to raise 100,000 dollars toward the hospital and the event. In recent years, they've raised around 65,000 dollars.
Doors open at 6 p.m.
This year, as with last year, money raised will go toward the purchase of additional medication dispensing equipment.

Riley Dance Marathon earns nearly double projected goal

BREMEN — The 2014 Riley Dance Marathon was a big success this year.
With a goal of $6,500, which committee members were concerned about meeting as late as the morning of the dance marathon, the total earned came out to $10,399.50.
"I think the key to it being successful was that we turned it over to the kids," Melissa Manges, guidance counselor at Bremen High School and head of the Riley Dance Marathon Committee, said. "When kids are in charge and put their hearts into it, the sky's the limit."

BREMEN — Melissa Manges, counselor at Bremen High School was nominated into the the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels during the Riley Dance Marathon last weekend.

Homeschooling panel held at Community Gospel

BREMEN — The Mint City Home Educators hosted a panel discussion Tuesday, March 18 at the Community Gospel Church in Bremen for families considering homeschooling their high school-age children.
A group of thirty parents listened to a panel of local parents and students that have experiences in home school during high school years and addressed issues concerning the process with topics ranging from choosing curriculum, maintaining transcripts and preparing for college.

Bremen Schools discuss makeup days

Bremen Public Schools Superintendent Russ Mikel formally announced his
retirement during the Bremen Public Schools board of trustees regular
meeting Tuesday, February 18. Snow canceled classes that day, but the
board meeting went ahead as scheduled.
"I'd like to thank the board, staff, students and parents for the
years," Mr. Mikel announced. "I plan to continue with my duties
through June 30th."
Mikel spent nine years serving on the board of school trustees. He

Bremen Castings redeems themselves with wastewater

BREMEN — In the Bremen's Wastewater treatment plant pretreatment program, it was noted that the 2013 testing for Bremen Castings found the company to be in "Significant Non-Compliance" for the third and fourth quarter of the year. A notice was issued to the local paper in regards to the situation, as is required by law.
