Walk/run planned for Bremenite with cancer

BREMEN — A walk/run is being organized for June to help a Bremen resident, diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, pay for treatment.
Ginger Smith, race director, is seeking sponsors and donations for “Eye Jog for Jake” 5K OffRoad Walk/Run.
This race is being held to raise funds to cover medical expenses for 26-year-old Jake Sahlhoff, a Bremen resident diagnosed with a rare form of cancer.
Sahlhoff was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma in August 2012, according to Smith.

Students learn about farm life during Ag Days

BREMEN — Agriculture instructor and Bremen FFA Association advisor Chad Berger is sure that elementary-aged kids who come for ‘Ag Days’ at Bremen schools will have special memories after they meet farm animals up close.
“The kids learn a lot about production agriculture and the steps it takes to get a raw product from the field to their table,” Berger said.

BPS has free lunches this summer for kids

BREMEN — This summer, Bremen Public Schools will again offer free lunch to children.
On weekdays from June 5 through Aug. 1, children ages 1 to 18 will be provided lunch free of charge. The serving line in the K-8 cafeteria will be open from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. However, no meals will be served July 1-5.
“Bremen Public Schools feels it is very important for a child to get a healthy meal,” said Hope Andrews, food services director for BPS. “This summer program will help children get just that.”

Sectional victory: Lions top Westview for title

WESTVIEW — Three days after the Bremen softball team earned a sectional title at Westview, the Lions baseball team followed suit with a thrilling 8-7 sectional championship win in eight innings over the host Warriors at the Class 2A Westview Baseball Sectional Monday.
The two teams were locked in a 5-5 tie at the end of regulation before Westview jumped ahead with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning.

Round Barn season dedicated to Bowen; “Plain and Fancy” opens at Round Barn

NAPPANEE — The 27th season of the musical “Plain and Fancy” kicked off inside the Round Barn Theatre, Wednesday, May 29, following an opening night reception held inside the Upper Room at Amish Acres Restaurant.
During the prelude to the featured performance, Executive Producer and CEO Richard Pletcher dedicated the current season to former Indiana Gov. Dr. Otis Bowen and his wife, Carol.
The former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, Bowen was a big supporter of the Round Barn Theatre.

Actor bringing message of faith, marriage

BREMEN — Kirk Cameron is a well-known actor and producer, but he is also a father of six and a husband passionate about the idea of family and marriage.
That passion has led to Cameron’s involvement with a pair of talks called “Love Worth Fighting For” where he is scheduled to appear.
“Love Worth Fighting For” is Saturday, June 8, at 12:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. and sponsored by Feed Your Faith at First Baptist Church Elkhart in Bristol.

Marshal County EMA: Strong to severe storms start tonight

The National Weather Service Hazardous Forecast indicates the potential for strong to severe weather beginning this evening and tonight. Damaging wind gusts associated with the storms is the primary threat.However, large hail up to one inch in diameter and an isolated Tornado cannot be ruled out.

Foster will play tennis at Bethel

BREMEN — Haley Foster has signed her letter of intent and will attend Bethel College to play tennis.
“I am so proud of Haley,” Bremen High School Head Coach Andrew Rohde said.
“She has made great strides in her tennis game over her four years at Bremen. More importantly, she has her priorities in order. High character, hard worker in classroom and on the courts. I’m very happy for Haley and her supportive family.” 
Foster earned First Team All Northern State Conference honors playing number one doubles for Bremen. 
Academically, Haley ranks at the top of her class with a 3.956 G.P.A.

Editor will be program speaker

CULVER — Lois Tomaszewski, managing editor of The Pilot News Group, will be at the Culver-Union Township Public Library for a program titled “The Scoop on Community Journalism.”
The program will be held on Monday, June 3, at 6 p.m. in the large meeting room.
Lois will speak about journalism, and the role a community newspaper has in a community like Culver. She will also discuss the future of community newspapers, and ways in which the community can be a part of the news process.
