Triton School Corporation is recognized nationally for commitment to music education

BOURBON — Triton received the SupportMusic Merit Award from the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation last week for its outstanding commitment to music education.
The designation was revealed during the NAMM Foundation’s announcement of 2014’s Best Communities for Music Education (BCME).

Triton to participate in SFSP

BOURBON — The Triton School Corporation has announced plans to participate in the Summer Food Service Program. Free meals will be made available to all children, 1 to 18 years, and to persons older than 18 years who are enrolled in a state-approved educational program for the mentally or physically disabled. Free meals will be provided to all children regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability. There will be no discrimination in the course of the meal service.

Blue-ribbon project

Triton Elementary fifth-grader Trenton Barnhart (pictured) received a first-place ribbon / Purdue Agriculture Research Award and Serim Research Award for his Trash Gas and Biomass Energy project at the regional level Science Fair competitions held at Notre Dame on March 22.
Other Triton representatives included: Jared Bules, sixth grade, second-place ribbon — (topic — Eggmosis); Gavin Greer, sixth grade, third-place ribbon (topic — Popcorn and Temperature); and Macclain Middaugh, fourth grade, first-place ribbon ( topic — Germs).

BPD wraps up Operation Pullover Blitz

BOURBON — As Operation Pullover Blitz #78 has come to an end, officers from the Bourbon Police Department have worked extra hours to keep people safe over the St. Patrick’s Day holiday. Five officers have worked an extra 18 hours just in Bourbon during this Blitz that focused on aggressive driving and impaired driving.

Borg named Marshall County Youth of the Year by Boys & Girls Club

PLYMOUTH — Each year in December the Marshall County Boys and Girls Club directors, staff and older members begin making nominations for their choice of the Youth of the Year. In January, Executive Director Billie Treber, Program Director Andrea Schoof and Bill Deering, athletic director, voted for the one youth that stands out the most from all of the nominees.

Books and Baskets

“It’s like being near your hero” was the general reaction Wednesday as Triton Elementary School presented its annual “Books and Baskets” event for intervention students and their families. Organized by intervention teacher Susan Mullin, the program paired students with Triton Jr./Sr. High School basketball players who read books with and to them and then shot baskets with them in the elementary gym. The enthusiasm was contagious as the players seemed to enjoy the experience as much as the students.

Bourbon Council discusses church parking

BOURBON — A parking issue for Bourbon Church of the Heartland was raised at the Bourbon Town Council meeting Tuesday evening, March 12.
Pastor Ted Westafer appeared before Council to note that Sunday morning parking in front of the 106 N. Main St. church was preventing cars from dropping off worshippers safely, especially when snow is present. He requested that two parking spaces in front of the church be designated “no parking” from 9:30-11:15 a.m. Sunday only.

Triton kindergarten round-up April 1

BOURBON — Kindergarten round-up at Triton Elementary School will be held from 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 1 at the school. 
Parents who would like to visit the kindergarten classrooms and take a look around the school, should please plan on arriving 15 to 20 minutes early.
Students will have an opportunity to meet the kindergarten teachers and participate in special classes while parents receive information about the school and their child’s school day.
Parents should please bring birth certificates and immunization records to this meeting.

Triton discusses balanced school calendar

BOURBON — Parents and community members spoke out freely as they questioned Triton Superintendent Donna Burroughs on the “balanced calendar” concept at last Monday’s school board meeting. The community had been invited to the meeting as one of several info-sessions being held in Marshall and surrounding counties on the proposed model. Burroughs, a leading expert on this concept, had prepared a hypothetical balanced calendar for Triton next school year which was duplicated and disseminated at all regional info-sessions.

Triton Elementary School holds annual science fair

BOURBON — The Triton Elementary School science department hosted its annual science fair at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 21 in the elementary gym.
There were four medals given for the top four overall best scores. The following students will continue to present their research at regional level science fair competitions held at Notre Dame on March 22: Jared Bules, sixth grade; Gavin Greer, sixth grade; Macclain Middaugh, fourth grade; Trenton Barnhart, fifth grade; and Austin Weissert (honorable mention), fourth grade.
