No. 1 Lady Cats trump Trojans

January 31, 2014

HAMLET — For the first quarter and a half, Triton was right in it.
But as things so often do with Class A No. 1 Oregon-Davis, the Lady Trojans’ early deficits snowballed fast.
OD closed the second quarter on a quick 12-0 run to take a 39-21 halftime lead, then used a 22-4 third quarter to run out to a commanding 36-point lead and put the game out of reach. The end result was a 75-35 victory by the Lady Cats at home at The Den in Hamlet Thursday.

Cavaliers hold off Bobcats, 45-38

January 30, 2014

HAMLET — Culver Community’s boys basketball team encountered a good news-bad news situation Wednesday.
First, the good news for the Cavs — a 45-38 victory over host Oregon-Davis at The Den following an eight-day weather-induced layoff for both squads.
The bad news, though, cropped up when the crunch-time turnover woes that led to three losses in the Cavs’ previous four games resurfaced, reducing a 16-point Culver cushion midway through the fourth frame to the seven-point final margin.

Rockies repeat as NLC champs

January 29, 2014

PLYMOUTH — Prior to last season, the Rockies hadn’t won an NLC wrestling championship since 1983. Now they can boast back-to-back titles.
The announcement Monday that this year’s Northern Lakes Conference Tournament would be cancelled left Plymouth the de facto champion after the Rockies ran the table in the dual meet portion of the conference schedule. The unbeaten run began with a 39-18 victory over Goshen back on Dec. 5 and finished up with a 68-6 rout of Concord on Jan. 16. Key to the run was a convincing 45-22 victory over perennial NLC powerhouse Elkhart Memorial on Jan. 9.

Cancellations to tonight’s events

January 28, 2014

The cold and blowing snow forced postponements to Monday night’s events, and Plymouth, Bremen and Triton even called some of Tuesday’s events early.
Plymouth’s girls basketball game versus Clay and the swim meet at CMA have been postponed with no scheduled makeup date as of yet. The NLC wrestling meet, originally slated for Saturday but pushed back to Tuesday was cancelled altogether. The boys freshman basketball game with Tippy Valley was also cancelled.
Bremen’s basketball doubleheader with Elkhart Christian scheduled for Tuesday was cancelled as well.
