Lancers try to unseat 4-peat champ Cats as Girls Bi-County opens Tuesday

January 17, 2011

The past few Bi-County Tournaments have seemed like something of a foregone conclusion, with Oregon-Davis topping the pile four straight years. With four-time tourney MVP Gabbi Minix and the rest of that dynasty long gone, however, this year’s 34th annual girls tilt could be the end of an era.
Just not if the Bobcats have anything to say about.

January 17, 2011

PLYMOUTH — Plymouth hung tough with LaPorte for a half, but the Slicers turned it up after the break.

Super sub Kopetski powers Lancers past Knox

January 17, 2011

LAKEVILLE — Four games ago, LaVille opted to convert senior Kaitlyn Kopetski into a super sub.
Four consecutive wins later, the move looks like a stroke of genius.
In the latest installment Kopetski, a 5-foot-11 forward, hit 11 of 13 from the charity stripe en route to a season-high 21 points, pulled in nine rebounds, and handed out three assists to power the Lancers to a 53-46 Northern State Conference girls basketball win over visiting Knox at Dale E. Cox Gymnasium Saturday.

January 15, 2011

DUNLAP — Plymouth’s boys basketball team drained 10 treys and collected a much-needed 52-47 win at Northern Lakes Conference rival Concord Friday.
Ryan McNeil scored each of his game-high-tying 15 points from behind the arc for the Pilgrims. Sean Smith, in his first night back from a five-game suspension, made an immediate impact for Plymouth with 15 points.
Mack Mercer, a 6-foot-7 freshman, added 14 points for Plymouth, which snapped a six-game skid.

Defense pushes Lady Cavs past Triton

January 15, 2011

BOURBON — Culver Community girls basketball head coach Tony Scheub mulled over his team’s side of the scoring ledger Friday night at Triton.
“Boy, we didn’t score very many points,” he said.
True. But the Class 2A No. 8 Cavs surrendered far fewer.
Buffeted by a superlative team defensive effort and double-doubles from senior twin towers Gwen Zehner and Patrice McBee, Culver defeated Triton 42-31 at The Trojan Trench to remain perfect in Northern State Conference play with only dates with LaVille and John Glenn left on the league slate.

January 15, 2011

WALKERTON — John Glenn’s boys hit the hardwood ready to play after the half. The Lady Falcons didn’t.
Glenn took a 29-23 lead into halftime but couldn’t hold on as the Lady Lions went on a 14-2 run to take a double-digit lead with 2:34 to go, then held on for a 53-44 win in the opener, while Glenn came alive after a bumpy 23-14 start in the first half of the boys game to surge past Bremen 49-38 Northern State Conference win on Homecoming Night at John Glenn.

Miller earns 3 finals cuts at NLC prelims

January 14, 2011

MIDDLEBURY — In the middle of the Northern Lakes Conference field, Plymouth has had to fight tooth-and-nail for two of its three NLC victories this season, and the road didn’t get much easier against a talented field at Thursday’s conference championship prelims.
The Lady Pilgrims were sitting at an even 3-3 in the conference heading into Thursday’s meet after a dominant 109-74 win over NorthWood and close victories against Wawasee and Goshen.

Richie’s patience pays off as Bobcats defeat Dragons, 80-74

January 14, 2011

HAMLET — Oregon-Davis junior point guard Zach Richie waited for the game to come to him Thursday against Argos.
And when it did, he latched on and never relinquished control.
After distributing the ball for four assists in the first half, Richie, the state’s leading scorer, exploded for 35 of his game-high 47 points in the second half — 22 in the fourth quarter alone — to lead the Bobcats to an 80-74 boys hoops win over the Dragons at The Den.
