Kayla Miracle gets off to undefeated start with CMA wrestling

December 14, 2010

CULVER — It’s not that Culver Military head wrestling coach Matt Behling hasn’t seen female wrestlers before.
It’s just that he’s never seen one quite this good.
Freshman Kayla Miracle is off to an undefeated start with CMA wrestling, moving to a remarkable 16-0 record with the team after going 5-0 over the weekend.
“I have to believe that’s a pretty good start for a girl in Indiana wrestling,” understated Behling. “And she’s not squeaking by either. She has nine pins this year, which is pretty good.”

Culver's Sanders heats up as Lady Cavs top Knox

December 13, 2010

CULVER — Clinging to a tenuous 47-43 lead late, Culver Community girls basketball head coach Tony Scheub heard the magic words “man-to-man.”
The Cavs adjusted — and executed — accordingly.
Culver senior Whitney Sanders fed 6-foot-1 senior Gwen Zehner from the right wing to the right block for three buckets in a 51-second span to open a 10-point spread with 3:46 left in the final frame, and the Cavs hung on for a 61-53 Northern State Conference win over Knox at John R. Nelson Gymnasium Saturday.

Culver rallies past Knox

December 13, 2010

CULVER — Culver Community’s boys basketball team just needed a little room to operate Saturday.
With the floor spread in the second half, the Cavs created driving lines, open shots, and offensive rebounding opportunities resulting in a game-changing 17-2 spurt and 57-46 win over Northern State Conference rival Knox at John R. Nelson Gymnasium.

Bremen falls short despite strong defensive effort

December 13, 2010

BREMEN — The wins might not be there yet for the Bremen boys basketball team, but improvement is.
A year ago, South Central beat Bremen by 29 points. It was a different game Saturday night, as Bremen had its chances in a 47-40 loss to the Satellites.
“The effort is always going to be there, and we executed the defensive game plan to perfection,” Bremen coach Kyle Hanyzewski said. “The only problem was our offense didn’t show up tonight. We just have to get those two going together, and when we do on the same night, we can beat some teams.”

CMA, LaVille wrestlers go head to head

December 10, 2010

LAKEVILLE — Both LaVille and Culver Military’s wrestling teams are young, but the Eagles are extremely talented.
CMA topped LaVille in 10 weight classes, including seven pinfall victories, for a dominant 52-22 win over the host Lancers in a dual wrestling meet Thursday at LaVille.
The visitors jumped off to an early lead with two pinfall wins and a major decision before the Lancers could get on the board.

Plymouth beats Washington inside

December 9, 2010

PLYMOUTH — Plymouth girls basketball head coach Dave Cox has been stressing the inside game to his players.
On Wednesday, the Lady Pilgrims made it clear they got the message as Plymouth’s bigs paid big dividends in the paint in a 48-39 win over visiting South Bend Washington at The Rock.

Eagles slow down Zehner, hand Cavs 1st defeat

December 9, 2010

CULVER — Culver Girls Academy finally unearthed the key to containing Culver Community senior star Gwen Zehner — don’t even let her touch the basketball.
Using a swarming 1-3-1 zone, the Eagles limited Zehner to 12 points on just eight shot attempts, forced 26 turnovers, and held the previously-unbeaten Cavs to a 23 percent mark from the field in a 62-40 win at John R. Nelson Gymnasium Wednesday.
The Academy’s Andrijana Cvitkovic, a 6-foot-2 sophomore, and 6-3 senior reserve Casey Hall gave the Eagles the height and muscle to handle both the 6-1 Zehner and her teammate, 6-3 Patrice McBee.

LaVille 'D' keys rout of Argos

December 8, 2010

LAKEVILLE — With little returning experience and few natural guards, turnovers have been a bugaboo for Argos this season.
Meanwhile, LaVille has been steadily developing its switching man-to-man defense in the three years since Michael Edison has taken over the program.
It was a recipe for a rout as Lancer defenders created 30 turnovers by the Dragons and ran out to a huge 31-8 first quarter lead for an eventual 62- 31 victory over visiting Argos Tuesday at LaVille.

Pilgrims enjoy turnaround vs. Tippy Valley

December 8, 2010

PLYMOUTH — What a difference a day makes. Or in the case of the Plymouth Pilgrims three days.
A tough night at Rochester on Friday turned into a great night at home on Tuesday as Plymouth looked like a different team taking a 63-35 win over Tippecanoe Valley.
Plymouth turned the ball over just six times on the night in taking the win, a marked difference from Friday.

Plymouth's Eads named Colts Academic All Star

December 7, 2010

PLYMOUTH — Dedication is a common theme to excellence at anything.

He is one of only three Class 4A athletes to be selected and he and his peers will will be honored in Indianapolis on December 19 at halftime of the Colts’ home game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
