Saturday’s Chargers for Change a success

PLYMOUTH — The Ancilla College athletic department and the Ounce of Prevention Foundation collected $2,125 to support breast cancer awareness through the efforts of their highly successful Chargers for Change event on Saturday.
Held at the LifePlex in conjunction with the men’s and women’s basketball games, all proceeds were used to benefit the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center in Plymouth.  A collection at Bremen High School was also held to help raise funds.

Lady Cavs enjoying banner year

CULVER — The sixth-ranked Lady Cavaliers found themselves in familiar territory Saturday.
Locked in a defensive battle with Winamac in the Class 2A North Newton Sectional championship, the Warriors’ zone had contained twin towers Gwen Zehner and Patrice McBee throughout the night, and the Cavs found themselves trailing by one point, 23-22. Most coaches would have been nervous, but not Culver head coach Tony Scheub.

Podium is in sight for Uceny

Plymouth Optimists hold annual Tri-Star Basketball Contest

PLYMOUTH — The Optimist Club of Plymouth held its annual Tri-Star Basketball Contest on Saturday, Feb. 5 at the Plymouth High School. Despite the snow, it was a successful afternoon for some of Plymouth’s boys and girls ages 8-13.

Triton unseats No. 5 OD for Sectional 50 title

HAMLET — Three Triton starters occupied the pine with second-quarter foul trouble against four-time defending girls basketball sectional champion Oregon-Davis Saturday.
The Lady Trojans hardly missed a beat.
Even with three reserves – including a freshman seeing her first sectional time – on the floor, Triton opened up a nine-point halftime lead and maintained at least a seven-point edge the rest of the way to unseat No. 5 OD in Class A Sectional 50 title-game action at The Den.

CGA stops Zebras in OT for Rochester title

ROCHESTER — The Lady Eagles can breath a sigh of relief.
Culver Girls Academy followed up a down-to-the-wire battle with defending champion Plymouth in the Rochester Sectional opener Tuesday with an overtime victory Saturday, holding the host Lady Zebras scoreless in the extra period for a hard-fought 44-39 championship.

Plymouth’s Miller rounds out career at state finals

INDIANAPOLIS — Plymouth senior Kenzie Miller wrapped up her high school career with a pair of top five finishes at the 37th Annual IHSAA Girls State Swimming Finals at the IUPUI Natatorium Saturday.
Miller clocked a 56.02 to place third in the 100-yard backstroke in her best finish in four years of state qualifying in the event, and she swam a 2:05.02 in the 200-yard Individual Medley to finish fourth in her third state appearance in that event.

Area heavyweights impress at Merrillville Semistate

MERRILLVILLE — A fearsome threesome are Culver Community’s Jeremiah Harvey, Plymouth’s Damon Howe and Bremen’s Abraham Hall.
That trio has made Marshall County the center of heavyweight high school wrestling in Indiana this season. And it will be no surprise to see all three contend for a championship next weekend at the IHSAA individual state wrestling finals. All three will be there.
Each qualified by finishing among the top four in the 285-pound weight class at Saturday’s Merrillville Semistate.

Sanders lifts No. 6 Cavs over Winamac at North Newton

MOROCCO — With twin towers Gwen Zehner and Patrice McBee struggling to produce, Culver senior guard Whitney Sanders stepped up with 13 points, lifting the No. 6 Cavaliers over Winamac 34-25 to win the Class 2A North Newton Sectional Saturday.
The Cavs overcame a one-point, 23-22 deficit in the final frame for their first sectional crown since 2002. Culver shot just 23 percent from the field but held Winamac to only 21 percent in the defensive contest. The Cavs hit 13 free throws in 22 tries compared to a 7-of-14 finish from the stripe by the Warriors.

Trojans beat Dragons 39-32

HAMLET — Triton baited the trap, and Argos stepped right into it time after time after time.
The Trojans’ 1-3-1 halfcourt trap forced 26 turnovers and held Argos to 33 percent from the field en route to a 39-32 Class A Girls Basketball Sectional 50 semifinal win at Oregon-Davis Friday night.
The Trojans take on host and four-time defending sectional champion OD tonight at 7:30 p.m. EST.
“We make it a goal to hold teams below 35 points, and we’ve done it two games in a row,” Triton head coach Adam Heckaman said. “We tell the girls that if the other team doesn’t score we can’t be beaten.
