February 22, 2011

CULVER — Culver Community High School enjoyed an historic athletics day Saturday with its first team regional title and individual state championship.
Now, the Cavs’ boys basketball team hopes to follow the lead set by the school’s girls basketball team and wrestling heavyweight state champion Jeremiah Harvey.

Lancers looking to beat Jimtown twice

February 22, 2011

LAKEVILLE — To beat Jimtown is always a challenge.
Beating the perennial Northern State Conference powerhouse twice in one season — in one week in fact — is going to be an uphill climb.
LaVille (9-9) will try to do just that as the Lancers finish out their NSC and regular seasons at home against the Jimmies (9-10) Friday, then turn around and face them again in the first round of the Class 2A Westview Sectional Tuesday.

Eagles hoping to win first title

February 22, 2011

CULVER — An interesting fact about Culver Military Academy — the Eagles have never won a sectional.
In 36 tries since joining the IHSAA State Basketball Tournament in 1974, they've never once hoisted the trophy despite drawing from an international talent pool that has included some of the most gifted players to grace northern Indiana hardwood. Not in 24 years at Plymouth, not in six years at Warsaw, nor in five at North Judson, nor one at South Bend Washington.

Falcons hope early schedule pays off at sectional

February 22, 2011

WALKERTON – John Glenn’s boys basketball team plays a brutal early-season schedule for such a time as this.
With a Class 3A Sectional 19 first-round tilt against Mishawaka Marian set, and a second-round meeting with Culver Military Academy awaiting the winner, the Falcons (10-8) hope that non-conference slate pays dividends now.
“We told our kids this is why we schedule the way we have for the first five or six games of the season,” Glenn head coach Travis Hannah said. “They’ve been through that type of meat grinder. Hopefully, they can draw on that experience.

Dragons hope to end on high note

February 22, 2011

ARGOS — Seasons don’t get much tougher than what the Argos boys basketball team has endured.
“It has been tough but I feel like the kids still have a good attitude and they’re working hard,” Argos coach Doug Snyder said. “Obviously we’d like to have a better record, but we’re still going into each practice preparing like we have all season.”
Even with six seniors, Argos came into the season with little collective varsity experience. Seniors Matt Hollar and Sam Edmonds were the exception and have led the team throughout.

Harvey’s state title no surprise

February 22, 2011

CULVER — Wrestling championships are often decided long before any championship match, before a wrestler even takes his place on the mat opposite his opponent.
If anyone was prepared to win Saturday’s 73rd Annual IHSAA Individual Wrestling State Finals, it was Jeremiah Harvey.

Culver’s Harvey tops Plymouth’s Howe for state heavyweight title

February 21, 2011

INDIANAPOLIS — Two Marshall County wrestlers found themselves staring each other down for the third time this season, but this time the stakes were a bit higher as a state championship awaited the winner.
Plymouth’s Damon Howe and Culver Community’s Jeremiah Harvey already wrestled twice this year, once at regional and again at semistate, with Harvey walking away with both victories.
Saturday night at Conseco Fieldhouse in front of a record crowd of 10,285, the pair battled again and it was Harvey that came out on top for the third consecutive match with a 3-1 victory in overtime.

Lady Cavs win 1st regional

February 21, 2011

CULVER — Four-year Culver Community standout Gwen Zehner strode to the stripe for the biggest pair of free throws of her career Saturday.
Class 2A girls basketball regional final. Team down 32-31 with 38 seconds to go. Home crowd bellowing at ear-ringing decibels. ... And a quick chat with a referee that left the striped-shirt official laughing.

CGA falls in nip-tuck Rensselaer Regional semifinal

February 21, 2011

RENSSELAER — It took a pair of nip-tuck wins to get Culver Girls Academy into its first basketball regional in 14 years, and it took another down-to-the-wire game to get them out.

Defending champs end Triton run at Caston

February 21, 2011

FULTON — It didn’t take long in Saturday’s Caston regional to see why Fort Wayne Canterbury has won three straight state championships.
Facing upstart Triton, Canterbury scored the game’s first 13 points, led by 34 at halftime and cruised to a 71-36 victory. The Cavs later topped Gary Bowman 69-49 to reach the Class A final four.
Canterbury came in as the state’s second highest scoring team at 72 points per game. Bailey Farley (19 points), Kindell Fincher (18) and Madeline Troxel (12) paced the No. 3 Cavs, who dominated offensively and defensively.
