Lady Dragons struggle in loss to Kankakee Valley at girls Winter Classic

December 29, 2010

ARGOS — Argos’ girls basketball team suffered through one of those nights where almost nothing went right.
The Dragons shot just 29.6 percent from the field –— of 12 from 3-point range — struggled to an 11-of-23 finish from the charity stripe, and got out-boarded by 11 in a 57-45 loss to Kankakee Valley in the Winter Classic first round Tuesday at Phil Weybright Gymnasium.
Kankakee Valley advances to Thursday’s title tilt against Rochester at 6:30 p.m., while Argos meets West Central in the consolation round, also Thursday, at 6:15 p.m. Both games are at Argos.

Risner and Coad power Knox over Argos in boys Winter Classic opener

December 29, 2010

ARGOS — Knox defense was the key to the defeat of Argos in Round 1 of the Winning Edge Winter Classic, but it was really Redskins Josh Risner and Elliott Coad’s teamwork that unlocked Knox’s full power.
The Redskins’ in-your-face defense held the Dragons to just seven points in the second half for a 45-26 win that carried the Redskins to the championship game of the tournament to be held Thursday at Argos.
Todd Boldry, head coach for Knox, said he knew defense was going to make or break his team all night.

Tigers top Triton at Mid-Winter DH

December 22, 2010

WINONA LAKE — Both Triton’s basketball teams struggled with high turnover numbers and low percentage shooting in the second half at the Mid-Winter Classic.
The Lady Trojans coughed up nine turnovers while converting just 5 of 17 shots as Warsaw defeated Triton 41-28 in the girls opener, while the Trojans gave up seven of their 13 total turnovers and were held to 7 of 22 shooting after a 48-percent first half in the second half of their 55-43 loss to the Tigers in the main event at the Grace Orthopaedic Capital Center at Grace College Tuesday.

Inspired Elkhart Christian routs Bremen in 2010 boys closer

December 22, 2010

ELKHART — After Tuesday’s 2010 finale, the Bremen boys basketball team hopes the new year brings better results.
Bremen found itself in a 15-point hole after a quarter against Elkhart Christian Academy and never challenged the hosts in a 50-27 defeat.
“They came out ready to play and we did not,” Bremen coach Kyle Hanyzewski said. “Our defensive effort was very concerning. I’m at a loss for words, and anybody that’s ever seen us play defense would say the same thing.”

CGA runner Neer finally able to leave doubts behind her

December 21, 2010

CULVER — Runner Waverly Neer has been carrying something of a chip on her shoulder for a long time.
After securing All-American status with one of the top Indiana high school times ever at the 2010 Foot Locker Cross Country National Finals, maybe she can finally begin to put some of her doubts to rest.
The Culver Girls Academy senior seized 14th at the Foot Locker Nationals with a 17:51 at Balboa Park in San Diego, Cal. on December 11. The pace was the fastest of any runner in CGA history and fifth all-time by any Indiana runner at the girls meet.

Plymouth rallies past Panthers

December 21, 2010

NAPPANEE — After a tough Northern Lakes Conference loss at Warsaw a week prior, Plymouth was due for a bit of luck at NorthWood.
After trailing for nearly 27 minutes at the Panther Pit, the ball bounced the Lady Pilgrims’ way as they rattled off an 11-0 run and parlayed a pair of costly NorthWood turnovers into a 30-25 conference win Saturday.
“I think we dug a little deeper and we didn’t want to give away the second NLC win on the road, and we got this one,” said Plymouth girls basketball coach Dave Cox.

LaVille ekes out OT win at Glenn

December 21, 2010

WALKERTON — LaVille’s Zoe Bulick went from safety valve to savior.
The junior guard’s game-tying 3-pointer with 3 seconds left in regulation sent the game to overtime where the Lancers eked out a 53-50 Northern State Conference girls basketball win over John Glenn at The Aerie Saturday.
Trailing 47-44 with just seconds to play, LaVille’s last-ditch effort looked dangerously close to breaking down altogether. After a deflection in the left corner, LaVille’s Kaitlyn Kopetski located a wide open Bulick two steps left of the top of the key for the clutch triple.

Culver wins second conference game against Jimtown

December 21, 2010

CULVER — If Jimtown is a brick wall, then Culver’s Zoe Bauer was the bulldozer that broke through it.
The Cavaliers, led by Bauer, came from behind in the last minutes of the game to increase their Northern State Conference wins to two, with a W over the Jimmies, 41-33.
Jimtown came to Culver knowing they had to shut down the Cavs’ four-year varsity player. And for the first three quarters, they did just that.
“I think we did a great job on Bauer,” Jimtown head coach Randy DeShone said, “until the third quarter. He’s been around a while, and a kid like that is going to beat you.”

Bremen boys/ girls split doubleheader

December 21, 2010

In the girls contest, Bremen’s Brittney Pittman had 26 points while going 8-of-11 from 3-point range. Lerin Studt (13 points) and Jenna Pfeiffer (11) also scored in double figures while Kailee Feldman finished with 9 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
