Rockies dethrone Tigers at Plymouth Sectional

October 9, 2014

PLYMOUTH — There wasn’t a lot of offense generated in Wednesday’s sectional semifinal between Plymouth and bitter Northern Lakes Conference rival Warsaw. Instead, the outcome came down to who had the better finishing touch.
Fortunately for the Rockies, their forwards were just a little better.
Plymouth held on through the second half to claim a narrow 2-1 victory over the six-time defending champion Tigers at the Plymouth Soccer Sectional in a semifinal with a championship atmosphere Wednesday at Kindt Soccerplex.

Rockies get set for NLC challenge in Goshen

October 9, 2014

PLYMOUTH — Focus continues to be the word of choice around the locker room as a big win over Concord a week ago only means that this week Goshen stands in the way of an NLC title.
“(Coach) Bob Garrity made a point the other night at practice — he told me that we should probably remind them that the only thing they are guaranteed right now is a 7-3 season,” said Plymouth coach John Barron. “We’ve gotten a lot of kudos this week from a lot of people. We need to control what we can control, is our effort in practice.”

Argos advances past Glenn at LaVille Sectional

October 8, 2014

LAKEVILLE — Argos defeated Glenn 4-0 in the opening game of the girls soccer sectional at Newton Park. Courtney Dunlap scored on a pass from Megan Ditmire in the seventh minute for the eventual game-winner. The Dragons possessed the ball for the majority of the half, getting eight shots on goal to one for the Falcons, but Argos couldn’t find the finish and the game remained a tight 1-0 at the break.

Dragons down Cavs at Argos Sectional

October 7, 2014

ARGOS — It wasn’t quite as fast a start to the tournament as the Argos’ boys soccer team hoped to get off to, but it was more than good enough.
The Dragons picked it up in the second half en route to a convincing 11-1 defeat of Culver Community in the opening round of the Argos Sectional Monday.

Notre Dame still unbeaten after remarkable finish against No. 14 Stanford

October 6, 2014

SOUTH BEND — Thanks to a thrilling 17-14 victory over No. 14 Stanford Saturday and a wild week in college football, undefeated Notre Dame climbed to sixth in the Associated Press poll and fifth in the coaches poll and finds itself right in the thick of the four-team College Football Playoff conversation.
The Fighting Irish are 5-0 and will host North Carolina Saturday before traveling to Tallahassee to face top-ranked and defending national champion Florida State a week later for what should be the biggest game of the season to date.

NSC meet ends the same way it began

October 6, 2014

NEW CARLISLE — Back in 1982, when the first Northern State Conference cross country meet was run, everyone was chasing New Prairie.
Saturday, the final one took place, and not much has changed.
Bremen gave it a shot, but couldn’t finish the job, as the Cougars swept both boys and girls team and individual titles on a frigid, blustery morning in New Carlisle.
In the 33 years that the NSC held a league championship meet, New Prairie won 28 boys titles and 23 girls.

BREMEN — Every year, it seems the championship at the Bremen Boys Tennis Sectional boils down to a meeting between Plymouth and the host Lions.
This year will be no different.

Plymouth cruised to a 5-0 win over LaVille, while Bremen found its way to another 5-0 win against talented Northern State Conference rival John Glenn in the semifinals at the Bremen Sectional at DeSantis Courts Friday night.

Glenn’s dynamic duo; Combes, Dodson having memorable senior seasons

October 3, 2014

WALKERTON — Zach Combes and Adam Dodson are Glenn’s dynamic duo.
The Falcon seniors form arguably the best running back duo in the Northern State Conference, one that is as productive, if not more, than most you’ll find in the entire state of Indiana.
Combes and Dodson have combined to rush for 1,090 yards and 14 rushing touchdowns in six games this season.
“I would like to coach for 20 or 30 more years and it’s going to be awfully difficult to have a duo better than this for the rest of my life,” Glenn head coach Dave Sharpe admitted. “I’m enjoying this moment for sure.”
Sharpe should.
