Triton earns 2nd ever state berth

June 7, 2013

WINONA LAKE — However low Triton goes, Warsaw always seems to be a stroke better.
Less than a week after the Trojans suffered a disappointing 314-315 championship defeat at the hands of the host Tigers at the Warsaw Sectional, Triton came up a stroke short of a regional championship at Stonehenge.

Plymouth’s Mercer, Bales teaming up as All-Star Series kicks off tonight

June 7, 2013

GREENFIELD — Plymouth basketball standout Mack Mercer and his coach have been doing a little carpooling lately.
Mercer was selected in April as one of the six core players on the IndyStar.com’s Junior All-Star team, when PHS head coach Ryan Bales was also selected as one of just three coaches to the team, and the two have been enjoying the off-the-court time they’ve been spending together lately.

Diamond Spyders have big arms to fill as season opens Saturday

June 6, 2013

PLYMOUTH — The coming of the summer means the start of the American Legion baseball season in Plymouth, and Post 27’s Diamond Spyders will have to deal with some key pitching losses but also return some key elements for the coming year.
“I think some of the teams in the area had some success with young teams and we’re hoping for the same,” said Post Manager Will Hostrawser. “When you lose two quality pitchers like Sean Liedtky and James Hackworth, those aren’t necessarily guys you’re going to replace. We will be as successful as our pitching this year.”

Bremen ousted by Adams Central at Whiting Regional

June 3, 2013

WHITING — There’s not much you can do against a team that is hitting over .400 this season.
That’s what would ultimately be the Bremen Lions’ demise, as they came into the Class 2A Whiting Regional riding high after their Westview Sectional triumph with an 8-0 win over Churubusco and an 8-7 win over Westview in the final.
But unfortunately for Bremen, it ran into a finely-tuned hitting machine in Fort Wayne Luers Sectional winner Adams Central, who pounded out 14 hits on its way to an 11-1 six-inning rout of the Lions on Saturday afternoon in the first regional semifinal at Whiting.

Heckaman leads area athletes at girls state track meet

June 3, 2013

BLOOMINGTON — Say this for Leah Heckaman: She’s got a positive attitude.
Even though Heckaman had to face one of the toughest fields in years in the weight events, including a new state record holder in the discus, the Culver Academies junior was all smiles following Saturday’s IHSAA girls state track finals.
“I had a good day,” said Heckaman, who finished fifth in the discus and 10th in the shot put. “I knew what I wanted to do, and even if everything didn’t go perfect, I’m satisfied.”

CGA edges Carmel for state lacrosse title

June 3, 2013

INDIANAPOLIS — Culver Girls Academy lacrosse team captured its sixth state title in 11 years with a 9-8 win over Carmel Saturday.
Erin Thomas scored a goal off a pass from Kelsi Carr with 3:34 left to break an 8-8 tie. The Eagles led at halftime, 5-3, and led 7-4 after a Morgan Osborn goal. But Carmel slowly climbed back and tied the game with under five minutes remaining.
The Eagles were able to win the draw and run the clock down to 39 seconds before turning the ball over, but goalie Clair Fay gathered up the Carmel shot and ran out the clock to preserve the win.

Plymouth baseball to host special needs camp

June 3, 2013

PLYMOUTH — With the summer upon us, the baseball season is in full swing and Plymouth Jr. League Baseball and the PHS baseball program are hoping to get some other local players into the game.
Local coaches and players are putting together a special needs baseball camp on June 15 from 10 a.m. to noon on the C-League diamond east of the Plymouth Community Pool in Centennial Park. The camp will teach baseball skills to kids with disabilities, ages 6 to 12. Participants will get personal instruction from coaches and peers in hitting, fielding, defensive skills and more.

Tigers edge Triton for Warsaw title

June 1, 2013

WINONA LAKE — Last spring, Triton’s boys golf team lost on a fifth-score tiebreaker to the host Tigers for the championship at the Warsaw Sectional, and the Trojans entered Friday’s 2013 tournament-opener at Stonehenge with hopes of avenging that narrow loss.
They ultimately fell a score short once more, albeit this time without the need for a tiebreaker.
Warsaw edged Triton by a stroke, 314-315 for top team honors, while Columbia City carded 319 to claim the third and final team berth to next Thursday’s regional round of play at Stonehenge.

Glenn’s Schuman places ninth at state track meet

June 1, 2013

BLOOMINGTON — A couple hundred athletes competed at the IHSAA boys state track finals Friday night.
But there’s no question which was the most surprised medal winner.
“I really don’t know where that came from,” said Glenn junior Hunter Schuman, who broke his own personal best by over two feet to finish ninth in the shot put.
“I didn’t really expect to medal,” said Schuman. “I was just happy to be here.”
Competing in the first flight of the preliminary round, Schuman pitched the iron ball 54 feet, 6-3/4 inches before a full house at the Indiana University track in Bloomington.
