Uceny falls again at US Outdoor Championships

June 30, 2014

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Morgan Uceny’s fan page on Facebook was filled with messages of support Sunday evening.
“You’ll shake this off. Get back out there soon and do your thing!” wrote one well-wisher.
The inexplicable had happened again, and fans of the Plymouth native wanted her to know they are still with her.
Sunday afternoon, with a lap-and-a-half remaining in the women’s 1,500-meter run at the U.S. Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Uceny was in contention for a national title.
And then she tripped and fell to the track at Sacramento State University.

Panthers, Prentkowski win Warsaw Regional

June 17, 2014

WARSAW — The name of the game may be to survive and advance, but winning is just more fun.
NorthWood’s boys golf team carded a 305 for the team championship, while John Glenn’s Tyler Prentkowski won a two-hole playoff for the low medal at the Warsaw Boys Golf Regional Thursday at Stonehenge Golf Club.
Both Prentkowski and NorthWood head coach Brad Duerksen admit that championships weren’t necessarily at the forefront of their minds headed into Thursday’s regional but rather advancement to the state finals next Tuesday in Franklin. Winning just made the experience more fun.

Argos a popular destination on Chicago Fire summer camp circuit

June 17, 2014

ARGOS —  For the second consecutive season, the Chicago Fire has brought one of their youth soccer camps to Argos and for good reason.
You see the turnout in Argos is as good if not better than any of the Fire’s many other summer camps around northern Illinois and northern Indiana.
This week 74 boys and girls ages 7 to 16 have descended on Argos’ Community Park soccer fields.
Argos, a well-known hotbed for soccer, is the perfect place for Chicago Fire to hold its soccer camp for youth.

Lacher, Schuman save best for last at state track meet

June 10, 2014

BLOOMINGTON — Sam Lacher saved his best for last. So did Hunter Schuman.
Isn’t that the idea?
When you finally run your best race, or make your best throw, there’s no place better to do it than the IHSAA boys state track finals.
Bremen’s Lacher broke the 49-second barrier in the 400-meter dash for the first time in his life. As a result, he claimed state runnerup honors Saturday at the Indiana University track in Bloomington.

Triton takes regional championship

June 5, 2014

UNION MILLS — Mallorie Jennings hopes every outing could go as well as Tuesday, as she threw a shutout to carry Triton to a 4-0 victory over South Central in seven
innings for Triton’s first-ever regional championship.
Jennings kept South Central off the scoreboard for all seven innings she was on the rubber. She pitched a shutout, allowing no runs on three hits while
striking out six.
She also racked up two RBIs on two hits for Triton. She singled in the first inning and homered in the seventh inning.

Argos falls in five to South Central at Culver championship

June 5, 2014

CULVER — The Argos Dragons came up short in their bid to take home the Sectional 51 Baseball Championship, losing 14-2 to the South Central Satellites in the finals.
South Central put the bat to the ball early and often and it felt like there was just nothing in their power the Dragons could do to stop them.

Lady Lions fall short at regional

June 5, 2014

BREMEN — The Lady Lions reloaded and returned, but they fell just a little short again.
Bremen softball’s state tournament run ended at regional a second straight season as the Lions succumbed to visiting Eastside in a nip-tuck 2-1 outing at Pfeiffer Field in Sunnyside Park Tuesday night.
“They’ve got seven seniors on that team. If you’ve got a senior-lead team — good for them — that’s how you want to go out when you’re a senior,” said Bremen head coach Mike Huppert.

Argos knocks off Cavs at Culver Sectional

June 3, 2014

CULVER — Culver Community rallied, but the runs came too little, too late.
The Cavs plated three runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but it wasn’t enough to undo an 8-1 Argos lead, and the Dragons held on to knock off defending sectional champion Culver, 8-4 on the Cavs’ home field Saturday.
“I think we hit the ball well today. We’ve been playing well the last six or eight games,” said Argos head coach Lowell Hatfield. “We came out and hit the ball, we were aggressive on the bases and did what we had to do to win a baseball game.”

Clay closes out Plymouth, 7-2

June 3, 2014

PLYMOUTH — Key plays in key moments equaled a win for Clay and an early exit from sectional play for Plymouth as the Colonials took a 7-2 win at Bill Nixon Field Saturday afternoon.
Joey Lange was the key at the plate and Santos Kramer on the mound for Clay and execution that had been so instrumental to the Pilgrims heading into the tournament was lacking at key moments. Lange had a pair of homers — a grand slam in the second and a two-run shot in his next at bat — to account for all but one of the Clay runs. K.G. Parkhurst accounted for the other with a solo homer of his own.

Lady Cavs add 4x100 berth to state

May 30, 2014

CULVER — Culver Community had an historic performance at Tuesday’s girls track regional, advancing athletes in four events to the Indiana high school state finals.
Except that now, it’s five.
On Wednesday, the IHSAA invited Culver’s 4 x 100 relay team of Kayla Shaffer, Mickella Hardy, Justine Dexter and Denisha Brown to run at the state finals in Bloomington on Friday, June 6, using a callback provision in the qualifying rules.
In a nutshell ... they are too fast not to be there.
