Gierlowski masterpiece propels Glenn past Plymouth at Sectional 19

PLYMOUTH — If pitching and defense win championships, it would be hard to argue with the John Glenn Falcon’s chances of a sectional title at Plymouth.

Falcon starter Justin Gierlowski was one pitch away from a no-hitter, and Glenn made some slick defensive plays in his support in taking a 5-0 shutout from the host Pilgrims in the opening round of sectional play at Bill Nixon Field.

Purchase of Whitley plant confirmed

PLYMOUTH - The area got some positive economic news on Friday with the sale of Whitley Products to a Michigan based company - Aggressive Manufacturing Innovations or AMI.

"I can confirm that (AMI) has purchased the company and all of its remaining assets," said Kevin Smith a representative of AMI. "They just completed the sale and they are planning to re-open the Plymouth plant."

Smith said that he expected the company to be "operational to some degree" as early as next week but also said it would take some time before the company could become fully operational.

•Tara Latrice Lee, 22, of Plymouth was arrested by Plymouth Police at 11:23 a.m. on May 23 for assisting a criminal resisting a law enforcement officer.
•Jessalyn Taylor Matthews, 18, of Plymouth was arrested by Plymouth Police at 11:55 a.m. on May 23 for possession of methamphetamine.
•Jose Luis Miranda, 26, of Plymouth was arrested by Plymouth Police at 3:30 p.m. on May 23 for possession of marijuana.

TOPEKA — Coming into Thursday night’s Westview Sectional championship game with LaVille, Bremen had just three home runs on the year. The No. 6 Lady Lions doubled that stat in Topeka.

Bremen baseball advances to championship with 8-0 shutout of Fremont

TOPEKA — Bremen baseball coach Bo Hundt would rather get a big inning in the first. But hey, he’ll take the seventh if he has to.
The No. 10 Lions got six shutout innings from starter Jacob Bennitt, and they broke open a 3-0 game with five runs as Fremont rotated through a trio of pitchers in the top of the seventh in an 8-0 Class 2A Westview Sectional semifinal win over the Eagles in the nightcap in Topeka Thursday. Bremen now advances to face the host Warriors in the championship game Monday, slated for noon.

Schuman, Lacefield make state cut in shot
A pair of area shot putters made the cut out to next weekend's state finals at the Kokomo Boys Track and Field Regional Thursday night.
John Glenn's Hunter Schuman placed second in the shot with a best put of 52'3 3/4", while Plymouth's Adam Lacefield finished behind him in third with a mark of 51'5" as both made the top three cut out to the 110th Annual IHSAA Boys State Finals at the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex at Indiana University in Bloomington next Friday, May 31.

PLYMOUTH — Malcolm Arthur Rennells, 92, of Plymouth, entered into eternal rest at his home Wednesday morning, May 22, 2013 surrounded by his family.
He was born in Plymouth on April 6, 1921, the son of Clyde A. and Anna Elizabeth (Barber) Rennells. A lifelong resident, Malcolm graduated with the Lincoln High School Class of 1939.
On Jan. 18, 1942 in the Plymouth Wesleyan Church, he took as his bride the former Pearl Bernice Crum. They have continued their membership of the church throughout their 71 years together.
