Jail bond refinancing Ok'd

MARSHALL COUNTY — The refinancing of the 2006 Marshall County jail bonds is underway and expected to save more than a half-million in tax payer money.

The discussion began in June of what options the county had to refinance the bonds. Then in August the commissioners agreed to proceed with refinancing if there would be a minimum savings of $350,000 for the life of the bonds.

Argos advances past Glenn at LaVille Sectional

LAKEVILLE — Argos defeated Glenn 4-0 in the opening game of the girls soccer sectional at Newton Park. Courtney Dunlap scored on a pass from Megan Ditmire in the seventh minute for the eventual game-winner. The Dragons possessed the ball for the majority of the half, getting eight shots on goal to one for the Falcons, but Argos couldn’t find the finish and the game remained a tight 1-0 at the break.

Jefferson Street bridge ordered closed

PLYMOUTH — The traffic through the downtown area of Plymouth is going to be rerouted due to the closing of a busy intersection.
“I would like to motion we declare an emergency on the Jefferson Street bridge and we allow USI to get their company Beer and Slabaugh in to get started on this thing as soon as possible that the road would be closed Thursday morning as early as 6 a.m.” said Commissioner Roose.

SOUTH BEND — Martha Lucille Thacker-Milner, 104, of South Bend, passed away at 12:10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 6, 2014 at the South Bend Hospice House.
She was born on Nov. 12, 1909 in Etna Green to the late Otis W. Thacker and Carrie May (Shumaker) Thacker.
She grew up on the family farm between Bourbon and Argos. Martha attended ninth grade in Fort Wayne.

Lakeville and the Indiana Main Street Initiative

LAKEVILLE — Shirley Rynearson presented some good news to the Lakeville Town Council during their regular meeting Monday evening. The council learned about a grant opportunity through Indiana Main Street Communities. There are some requirements that will need to be met. The board will design a five-year plan and go from there.
In other news the council was updated on the fire department's fundraiser, purchase of additional water meters was approved and Orchard Apartment renovation progress was discussed. For the full details see today's Pilot News.

Park Board meeting

PLYMOUTH — The Plymouth Park Board met for their regular meeting Monday evening.
Topics for the night included the lights at Bill Nixon Field. Bids for the project were reviewed and Mike Hite, park superintendent, recommended accepting the bid from Michiana Contracting for $196,835.
Freedom Park was another hot topic. The park department received funds through an insurance settlement from storm damage. Those funds will be used to help build Freedom Park, an all inclusive playground, at Packard Woods park with the board's approval.

Jackknifed semi closes road

PLYMOUTH — A jackknifed truck leaking fuel caused a portion of US 30 and King Road to be blocked to traffic for several hours Monday.

According to the report from Marshall County Police, driver Edward Tripp was westbound on US Highway 30 about 1:16 p.m. and attempted to turn onto King Road when he lost control of the truck, causing it to jackknife. Fuel spilled from the damaged fuel tank and leaked onto the road surface.

Tripp was treated at the scene by Plymouth EMS and transported to the hospital for examination, according to the police report.

Dragons down Cavs at Argos Sectional

ARGOS — It wasn’t quite as fast a start to the tournament as the Argos’ boys soccer team hoped to get off to, but it was more than good enough.
The Dragons picked it up in the second half en route to a convincing 11-1 defeat of Culver Community in the opening round of the Argos Sectional Monday.

LAKEVILLE — Herbert M. Heckaman, 96 years old, a lifelong resident of Lakeville-LaPaz area, passed away at 7 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2014 at his home. Mr. Heckaman was born on Nov. 2, 1917 in LaPaz to the late Oliver E. and Chloe B. (Jones) Heckaman. On June 8, 1947 in Lakeville, Herb married Betty J. Geyer who preceded him in death on Oct. 25, 2000.
