US 421 closing in Starke/Pulaski counties

September 10, 2014

STARKE/PULASKI COUNTY – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) announces the closure of U.S. 421 between the west junctions of State Road 10 and State Road 14 beginning Thursday, Sept 11 through the end of the day Friday, Sept 12, weather permitting. This stretch will close again to finish the project during the day Monday, Sept 15. Crews will perform a chip seal and fog seal operation to preserve the road surface. Crews will do their best to escort local traffic through the worksite, but drivers are encouraged to find another route due to loose stone which will be present.

UPDATE South Bend NOAA alerts back online

UPDATE: The NOAA Weather Service Transmitter, WXJ-57, in South Bend is back in service.

MARSHALL COUNTY — From the Marshall County Emergency Management office:

The NOAA Weather Radio station in South Bend, WXJ-57 at 162.400 MHz is currently off the air. That means that the NOAA All Hazard Alert Radios will NOT activate if a watch or warning is put out.

Pilgrims take care of business vs Panthers

PLYMOUTH — With a load of returning talent to this year’s lineup, Plymouth’s boys tennis team has a bit of a target on its back. Fortunately, the PIlgrims proved up to the challenge Tuesday.
Plymouth got NorthWood’s best look, but the Pilgrims still earned a 5-0 victory in a battle of Northern Lakes Conference unbeatens in Centennial Park.

ROCHESTER — Mrs. Evelyn R. Reese, 85, of Rochester, was surrounded by her loving family when she passed away at the home of her daughter at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6, 2014. 
On Oct. 19, 1928, Evelyn was born in Fulton County the treasured daughter of Luroy and Elizabeth Laura Smith Bick. She shared her childhood with two brothers, Clyde and Charles. In 1946, Evelyn graduated with her class from Rochester High School.

SOUTH BEND — Darrell E. Merrill, 56, of South Bend passed away at 6:15 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7, 2014 at Memorial Hospital. He was born on Oct. 27, 1957 in South Bend to William E. and Shirley Ann (Huffman) Merrill. On Sept. 25, 1982 in South Bend he was united in marriage to the former Pamala Kalamaja.

County budgets for 2015 approved

MARSHALL COUNTY — The Marshall County Council had to make budget cuts to the various department's proposed budgets in order to keep the budgets in line with the anticipated revenue for the year. In addition to making the appropriate cuts the council members decided to offset the expected increase in employee insurance (20-25 percent) by mandating employees contribute five percent of the premium. Full time County employees will also receive a slight raise in 2015.

Limited parking coming soon

PLYMOUTH — Parking in front of Lincoln Junior High could soon be limited to 2 hours. Plymouth Board of Public Works member Shawn Grobe informed the board that he had been informed by Plymouth Superintendent Dan Tyree that parking is an issue. Visitor to the school have difficulty finding parking spots as they are filled all day long. The council agreed to look into the matter and further discuss it at their next meeting.

MONTICELLO — Reginald L. “Reg” Shireman, 70, of Monticello, passed away at 1:34 p.m., Friday, Sept. 5, 2014 at Franciscan St. Elizabeth East Hospital in Lafayette.
Visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8, 2014 at Springer-Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home of Monticello. Friends may also call one hour prior to services Tuesday at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be at 12 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with close friend, Jay Janke officiating.
Private burial will follow for the family in Riverview IOOF Cemetery.
