LEITER’S FORD — Former Leiter’s Ford resident, Mr. Dan Cissna, 74, was surrounded by his loving family when he passed away at 3:30 a.m. on March 29, 2014 at Hickory Creek of Winamac. This ended his valiant 30-year battle with multiple sclerosis.

BREMEN — Pauline Gurtner, 98 years old, residing in Bremen, passed away at 6:23 p.m. on Sunday, March 30, 2014 at Pilgrim Manor, Plymouth. Mrs. Gurtner was born on Jan. 10, 1916 in Wabash to the late Victor and Elizabeth (Fahl) Landis. She has lived in Bremen for the past 50 years. On Nov. 25, 1937 in Wabash, she was united in marriage to Guilford B. Gurtner who preceded in death on Dec. 23, 1989. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, James and Phillip Landis; and one sister, Ruth Dale.

LOGANSPORT — John R. Wakeland, 91, of Logansport, passed away Saturday, March 29, 2014 in the emergency room at Logansport Memorial Hospital.
Born Jan. 3, 1923 in Veedersburg, he was the son of Manson A. and Lola M. Sigler Wakeland. He was married to Dorotha Betty Smith Wakeland, who survives.
John proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II. He was retired from Logan Machine where he had worked as a machinist.

New business, new abatement

A new business received approval for the personal property tax abatement. Five local companies received recognition for contributing significant capital to expansions over the past year. A second "shovel ready" site is in the works for the county. A local Boy Scout received congratulations from local officials.

WARSAW — Evelyn “Thelma” M. Scott, 93, lifelong resident of the Marshall and Kosciusko County area passed away on Saturday, March 29, 2014 at 7:55 a.m. in her Warsaw home.
She was born May 29, 1920 to William and Goldie (Brooks) Brown at Silver Lake. She married Joseph W. Scott on June 12, 1953; he died Jan. 11, 2000. Evelyn attended Atwood High School. She and her husband were both faithful members of the United Pentecostal Church of Bourbon.
