Lady Cats lose Holiday Classic opener
Penn saw nine different players score, and the Lady Kingsmen handed Class A No. 2 Oregon-Davis a 63-42 defeat in the Texas Roadhouse Holiday Classic at South Bend Washington Thursday.
The Lady Cats were paced by Ashley Campbell‚Äôs game-high 16 points. Jesse Avarone scored 10, and Haley Collings and Alicia McIntosh each scored seven in the loss.
Penn was led by 11 points from Taylor Lutz and 10 from Jessica Alexander as the team moved to 9-3.

ROCHESTER ‚ÄĒ¬†Hollis D. France, 69, of Rochester died unexpectedly at 11:35 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 23, 2012 in his residence.
He is survived by his wife, Donna of Rochester; his son, Thomas J. (Michelle) France of Rochester; his daughter, Michele A. (Travis) Brock of Olmsted Falls, Ohio; seven grandchildren; and his sister, Lorraine (Boyd) Alderfer of Florida.
A private memorial will be held at a later date.

ELKHART ‚ÄĒ¬†Kathleen ‚ÄúKathy‚ÄĚ L. Sayer, 67, of Elkhart, (formerly of South Bend) passed away at 1:55 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 23, 2012, in her home.
She was born Oct. 31, 1945 to Norman T. and Lola Mae ‚ÄúJo‚ÄĚ (Gilmore) Compton in South Bend, and was a lifelong area resident.¬†
Kathy was preceded in death by her father, Norman T. Compton; stepfather, Clyde Wise; mother-in-law, Irma Sayer; and an older sister, Nancy (Joe) Chmiel.
On Nov. 11, 1987, as Kathleen L. Compton, she married Ronald D. Sayer in South Bend.
Wilma Wolfe Murphy

CULVER ‚ÄĒ¬†Wilma Murphy, 100, passed away Friday morning, Dec. 21, 2012, after an illness.¬†
Wilma was born Aug. 17, 1912 in Pulaski County. She graduated from Winamac High School in 1930. She worked at Ball Band in South Bend, until her marriage to William on May 6, 1935. She was employed in the Pulaski County Courthouse in the CFA in 1944. She then worked for the County Auditor and Surveyor until she took employment at the First Union Bank and Trust Company, Winamac until her retirement in 1974.¬†
Police arrested William Newman at a home in Argos Wednesday night.
Newman, 42, led police on a chase in Marshall County Dec. 11.
Newman eventually fled into a field near Tyner.
Police searched for him but were unable to track him down.
Marshall County Sheriff's Department officials contacted the Argos Police Department and informed them they believed Newman to be at a home on the 100 block of North Michigan Street in Argos.
Newman answered the door when police arrived. He then quickly slammed it and attempted to flee.
Police surrounded Newman and he quickly gave up.

She is survived by her husband, Larry; a daughter, Melissa Owsley of Selma; a son, Darrin (Kyong) Mikesell of Ft. Wayne; five grandchildren; two sisters, Marilyn (Joe) Varnadore of North Beach, Md., Shirley Farrell Estep of Charleston, W.V.; and two brothers, Everett Henderson of Akron, Jerry (Beverly) Henderson of Denver, N.C.

He is survived by his wife, Rhea; two daughters, Carol Ann (Greg) Amend of Mason, Ohio, Pam (Charles) Jones of Rochester; a son, John ‚ÄúJD‚ÄĚ Pryor of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a sister, Janet (John) Kassbaum of Carmel; and a brother, Carl (Terri) Pryor of French Lick.

PLYMOUTH ‚ÄĒ Katherine A. ‚ÄúKathy‚ÄĚ Brosmer Coyer, 46, of Plymouth, fought a 15-year cancer-related illness that resulted from ulcerated colitis and passed away at 8:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 21, 2012 in the attentive and loving care of the Elkhart Hospice House. Kathy faced life‚Äôs adversities with an energetic spirit.
Verna Lou (Martin) Stevens

ARGOS ‚ÄĒ¬†Verna Lou (Martin) Stevens, 73, of Argos died Dec. 21, 2012 at 6:20 a.m. at St. Vincent‚Äôs Hospice in Indianapolis. She had been in declining health for several months.
She was born Oct. 28, 1939 in Tippecanoe to Virgil R. (Bud) and Mildred Olive (Baer) Martin. She had lived in Argos for 52 years coming from Tippecanoe.
Dec. 9, 1960 in Rochester, she married Harold ‚ÄúCurly‚ÄĚ Dean Stevens. He preceded her April 20, 2012.
