Maxinkuckee Environmental Council, Fund announce opposition to wind farm project

The Lake Maxinkuckee Environmental Council (LMEC) and the Lake Maxinkuckee Enironmental Fund (LMEF) released a statement last week formally announcing they do not endorse a wind farm project proposed by Florida energy company NextEra. The statement notes the organizations “would like to clarify and comment upon statements made in NextEra Energy Resource’s paid advertisement in the Culver Citizen on August 11.”

PLYMOUTH — A local group has decided to step into the battle over the wind in Marshall County.
NextEra Corporation’s proposed “wind farm” project in Marshall and Fulton Counties has brought a storm of controversy from property owners opposed to wind turbines in the county, especially around Lake Maxinkuckee. While the opposition to the wind projects have made their position clear another group of residents has their own take on the controversy.

Mayor meets with Consul General of Mexico; discusses goals for city's Hispanic population

PLYMOUTH — The new Consul General of Mexico in Chicago, Eduardo Arnal, visited Plymouth Tuesday afternoon.
Arnal met with Mayor Mark Senter as part of his Indiana tour to discuss some of his goals for the Hispanic population under his jurisdiction (Illinois, Wisconsin, and the northern part of Indiana).
Arnal mentioned immigration issues, saying that a common question he gets is why Mexicans do not enter the U.S. legally.
“The answer is easy,” said Arnal. “Because it’s impossible. Not difficult—impossible.”

Rockies draw with Lions, 3-3

BREMEN — The past few seasons, it seems neither Plymouth nor Bremen can get the better of one another.
Tuesday's game was no exception as the Rockies scored late to force a 3-3 draw after a back-and-forth contest on the Lions' home turf at Bremen.

Uceny set for finals at World Track & Field Championships

The moment of truth has arrived.
“The final will be about taking a risk,” said Plymouth native Morgan Uceny from a secluded spot underneath Daegu Stadium in Daegu, South Korea, early Tuesday morning. “You can’t win without taking a risk.”
At 7:55 a.m. Thursday (EDT), the 2003 Plymouth High School graduate will toe the starting line with 11 other women seeking a Gold Medal in the 1500-meter run at the IAAF World Track & Field Championships.

Boys cross country
Bremen wins 3-way with Triton, LaVille
Bremen put five runners in the top eight to beat both Triton and LaVille in a three-way Northern State Conference boys cross country meet at Triton Tuesday.
Thomas Dean and Jack Jordan finished two-three for the Lions, while Byce Wanemacker and Treton Cooper went four-five for second-place Triton, and Nick Amor paced the race with a 17:43 for LaVille.

AYP grades in for Plymouth

PLYMOUTH — As a corporation, the Plymouth Schools have achieved an “A” rating by the Indiana Department of Education for 2011.

Ratings for the individual schools in the corporation ranged from “A” in all four elementary buildings to a “D” at LJH. Riverside Intermediate is ranked as a “B” school and Plymouth High School as a “C” school.

Bremen schools get 'A' from DoE

BREMEN — “We have worked long and hard to earn that,” said Bremen school superintendent Russ Mikel Monday, of the school’s exemplary rating from the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE).

This is the first year that Bremen schools have received an A.

The state’s rating system is based on Public Law 221, an accountability system for grades K-12.
Schools are placed in one of five categories: A (exemplary progress), B (commendable progress), C (academic progress), D (academic watch), or F (academic probation).

Teens work on career goals at Club

PLYMOUTH — Cheyenne McIntire and Dakota Nussel know what they want to be when they grow up.

Both freshman in high school, the two students are not letting their youth get in the way of accomplishing their career goals. In addition to taking special classes at Plymouth High School, McIntire and Nussel are both participating in the Boys and Girls Club program called Career Launch.

The once-a-week class is taught by program director Andrea Schoof, who hopes to add job shadowing to the program for the first time this year.

NORTH LIBERTY — Anton B. Braun, 33, passed away unexpectedly Friday, Aug. 26, 2011 in South Bend. Anton was born July 8, 1978 to Philip and Suellen (Thiel) Braun in Plymouth. Aug. 2, 2003 in South Bend he married Tracy (Parks) Braun. Mr. Braun graduated from John Glenn High School and Lima Tech and worked as a heavy equipment technician.
