Glenn proud but not resting on accomplishment

December 30, 2010

WALKERTON — Things are moving right up for John Glenn High School.
In recent numbers released by the Indiana Department of Education the school earned a passing grade from the federal government in their AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress) ratings, a commendable progress ranking from the state of Indiana for Public Law 221 accountability, and the school’s 2010 graduation rate was up almost a full percentage point from a year ago at 92.6 percent.

Bluejays double Cavs at home tilt

December 30, 2010

NORTH JUDSON — It’s been nearly nine months since Culver dethroned North Judson in Sectional 34 play, and by the look of things Wednesday, that loss had been on the Bluejays' minds ever since.
Judson hit the court running, jumping off to a 14-nil lead against the Cavaliers and never looking back in a dominant 72-35 reprisal victory at the Winning Edge Holiday Tournament at North Judson Wednesday.

Plymouth swim alums have a reunion with a cause

December 29, 2010

PLYMOUTH — While many drank hot chocolate by a roaring fire during the holidays, some of Plymouth High School’s hardiest athletes were in the water.
Granted it was the PHS pool — indoors — that hosted what’s become the Christmas holiday tradition of the Plymouth Alumni Swim meet, but those in attendance were there for a good cause: Honoring a long-time swim team supporter and raising some money for charity.

Bauer breaks record as Cavs top Caston

December 29, 2010

NORTH JUDSON — Zoe Bauer said he wasn’t even thinking about the scoring record. The Culver senior preferred to take a back seat to the Cavaliers’ front line Tuesday.
In the end, he got the record anyway.
After putting up 10 points in the opening frame to push his team to a 15-10 lead at the quarter break, Bauer was mostly quiet in the second and third frames, dishing out six assists as the Cavaliers pounded the ball in the paint to take a double digit lead at the half and build to a 36-24 advantage headed into the final frame.

TOs costly as Bluejays bury LaVille

December 29, 2010

NORTH JUDSON — It was an all-too familiar theme for the Lancers.
Already on a two-game skid after a 3-0 start to the season, high turnovers plagued LaVille a third straight game, and the result was their third straight loss as the Lancers fell 77-61 to undefeated North Judson-San Pierre at the North Judson Winning Edge Holiday Basketball Tournament Tuesday.

Lady Dragons struggle in loss to Kankakee Valley at girls Winter Classic

December 29, 2010

ARGOS — Argos’ girls basketball team suffered through one of those nights where almost nothing went right.
The Dragons shot just 29.6 percent from the field –— of 12 from 3-point range — struggled to an 11-of-23 finish from the charity stripe, and got out-boarded by 11 in a 57-45 loss to Kankakee Valley in the Winter Classic first round Tuesday at Phil Weybright Gymnasium.
Kankakee Valley advances to Thursday’s title tilt against Rochester at 6:30 p.m., while Argos meets West Central in the consolation round, also Thursday, at 6:15 p.m. Both games are at Argos.

Risner and Coad power Knox over Argos in boys Winter Classic opener

December 29, 2010

ARGOS — Knox defense was the key to the defeat of Argos in Round 1 of the Winning Edge Winter Classic, but it was really Redskins Josh Risner and Elliott Coad’s teamwork that unlocked Knox’s full power.
The Redskins’ in-your-face defense held the Dragons to just seven points in the second half for a 45-26 win that carried the Redskins to the championship game of the tournament to be held Thursday at Argos.
Todd Boldry, head coach for Knox, said he knew defense was going to make or break his team all night.
